Evernote Password Reset

EvernoteOn March 2, 2013 the Evernote team released a statement that their security team detected suspicious activity on their servers.  As you can see in part of their statement below, usernames, Evernote email addresses, and encrypted passwords were accessed.  However, your Evernote passwords are encrypted and are secure.  Encrypted passwords are stored in a way that they are unreadable unless you have the proper key to decode it.  The individuals trying to access the Evernote information did not have the encryption key, which means they could not see your password.

The investigation has shown, however, that the individual(s) responsible were able to gain access to Evernote user information, which includes usernames, email addresses associated with Evernote accounts and encrypted passwords. Even though this information was accessed, the passwords stored by Evernote are protected by one-way encryption. (In technical terms, they are hashed and salted.)

As a security precaution, Evernote is requiring all users to reset their passwords.  If you’ve tried to access Evernote on your smartphone or computer, you may have noticed you are being prompted to enter your password.  If you haven’t reset your Evernote password yet, you will be required to before you can access your account again.  Log into the Evernote website to reset your password.  You will also want to update all of your Evernote apps on all devices.

While our password encryption measures are robust, we are taking additional steps to ensure that your personal data remains secure. This means that, in an abundance of caution, we are requiring all users to reset their Evernote account passwords. Please create a new password by signing into your account on evernote.com.

Keep the tips in the Manage Your Passwords post Sam wrote in mind when you create your new password.  Find something that is easy for you to remember but is something only you would know.  Try not to use words in the dictionary or the names of your kids or pets as someone might easily guess them.  Using a combination of upper and lower case letters and add special characters when possible.

This is an unfortunate situation but I think Evernote made the right decision to have everyone reset their passwords.  I feel comfortable leaving my information with Evernote.  Having your information stored in the cloud makes it very easy to access your information wherever you are and on multiple devices.  But situations like this are a risk that you take when you use the cloud and its why its so important to always use strong passwords.

Evernote 102: Your Guide to Getting Started With Evernote

I’ve had several people ask me for help getting started with Evernote which I love because that means I’ve convinced you of how amazing Evernote is. So here is Evernote 102: Your Guide to Getting Started With Evernote.

Sign up for your free account

If you haven’t already, go to Evernote‘s website and sign up for a free account.  Don’t spend the money for a premium account until you are sure Evernote is right for you and the amount of storage you get with the free account is more than enough for the average user.

Install the apps

First, install the Evernote client on your computer(s).  There are apps for Windows and Mac and the app is free, regardless of which operating system you use.  Next install the smartphone and tablet apps, you can find the app in the App Store and Android Market.  Android users, be sure to install the Evernote widget (long press on the screen you want to add the widget to) and you can create new notes with a single tap.

Install the web clipper

The best part about Evernote is the web clipper that allows you to clip sections or entire web pages into a note.  The web clipper also saves the URL the text came from and saves it in the source field of the note for you to access if you need to reference it later.  When you clip a page, you can also pick which notebook to save the note to, add tags, and add additional text to the note.

To install the clipper, go here and drag the web clipper to your bookmarks toolbar.  If you use Firefox or Chrome, you can install the Evernote extension instead of using the web clipper.  Same functionality, but instead of the clipper in the bookmarks bar, its a button in your browser.

Find Your Evernote Email Address

With your Evernote account, you get an email address to use to email notes into your Evernote account.  This is a great feature of Evernote and I use it to forward receipts, trip itineraries, articles from my RSS Reader, and any other information I want to retain and have accessible everywhere I go.  To find your Evernote email address in the client go to your Account Settings, on your web account go to Settings, and you can find the email address in your Account Settings on your mobile app.

Add your Evernote email address to your Contacts and give it an easy name for you to remember.  Mine is setup as “Me @ Evernote” which means I address all my emails to Me and it finds my Evernote address.  You can add @notebook name or #tag name in the subject line to assign a tag to the note.  For more information on using your Evernote email address, check out this article on the Evernote Blog.

Ready, Set, Go!

You’ve got the basics setup and now the best thing to do is to just start using it.  Add new notebooks and tags as you need them.  Its much easier to build your note organization as you go rather than to try anticipate your needs from day one.  I’ve been using Evernote for almost three years and I still regularly make changes to my notebooks to organize my notes in a way that makes sense for the way I work.

Want to take your Evernote skills a step further?  I suggest you take a look at the Evernote blog, forums, and if you are serious about Evernote, consider purchasing Evernote Essentials by Brett Kelly.  Evernote Essentials has been on my wish list for a while and I will be making the purchase sooner rather than later.

Evernote is what you make of it, so make it your own!

Using Evernote: Everywhere, On Anything

EvernoteIt’s no secret we’re Evernote fans at Beyond the Defaults. We use it for a lot more than just organizing thoughts for this site.

Abby was the one who turned me on to Evernote, and I’ve found it to be a very useful tool for organizing just about anything.

So here’s another really good reason to use it: not only can you organize anything, the application also runs on just about everything.

I have Evernote installed on:

  • My desktop computer (Windows 7 Professional/64-bit)
  • My MacBook Pro (OS X Lion)
  • My iPad (iOS 4.3 – soon to be iOS 5)
  • My iPod Touch (iOS 4.3)
  • My iPhone (iOS 5)
  • My (now retired) BlackBerry Tour (BBOS 5.x)
  • My Motorola Xoom (Android 3)
  • My BlackBerry PlayBook (QNX)
  • My Kindle Fire (Android 2.3)

That’s eight different platforms (since the iPad and iPod run the same operating system), and it works well on all of them.  Sure, some flavors of it are more feature-rich than others, but I have a way to use the tools regardless of which device is handy.

Now that’s making the most of the tools available. If you’re not using it yet – why not?

12 Reasons Why You Should Use Evernote

EvernoteI’ve been using Evernote for several years now and during that entire time, I’ve been trying to convince my husband to use Evernote too.

After years of trying to convince him, he’s still not interested (and I’m not sure why). So just to make sure it’s not just me, I thought I’d test my reasoning on you, our loyal readers.

Here are my top 12 reasons why I use Evernote (and why I think my husband – and you – should too):

  1. Blog Management – I keep a running list of blog post ideas, a history of published posts, and any other blog related info.  And I’ve subscribed to my blog using my Evernote email address to keep a backup of every post.
  2. Receipts – Those little scraps of paper that magically seem to multiply, otherwise known as receipts?  Yeah, they are taking over my purse, desk, and kitchen counters.  I can take a picture or scan the receipt and save it in Evernote.
  3. Shopping – I recently purchased a new minivan and shopping for a new car is my personal hell.  After a while, all the cars run together and who can remember prices and options?  With the Evernote Android app, I took pictures of the cars we looked at and made notes.  Also, works for appliance and laminate floor shopping (speaking from personal experience).
  4. Home Management – I keep track of account numbers and other hard to remember info, and have you thought about what you would do if you lost your wallet?
  5. Legally Changing Your Name – When I got married in 2010, I had to legally change my name on all of my accounts and it took forever.  I used Evernote to keep track of the accounts I had changed, when I changed them, and any related documentation.
  6. Books To Read – I love to read and I’m always on the hunt for new books.  I keep a notebook in Evernote of books to read which is perfect because someone just got a Barnes & Noble gift card for Christmas.
  7. Math Facts – My 7 year old stepson has to practice his math facts for school, so I can setup practice tests for him using Evernote and Evernote Peek (that works with the iPad 2 and smart cover).  He gets to use the iPad and practice his math facts, everyone wins.  (Evernote Peek does not work well if you have a passcode set for your iPad.)
  8. Christmas – Everyone has their own tricks for staying organized for Christmas.  My mom uses paper lists written in pencil, I use Evernote.  I create a Christmas 2011 notebook and I create a note for everyone on my list.  I use checkboxes to keep track of what has been purchased and what’s left to do.  Its easy to keep track of, I can share the notebook with my husband (once I wear him down convince him to use Evernote) to make sure its been checked twice, and its easier to secure from prying eyes than a paper list.
  9. Crafty Ideas – I will be honest with you, I love doing crafts and I have an unhealthy obsession with my hot glue gun.  I use Evernote (and Pinterest which we’ll cover another day) to keep track of ideas I want to try out.
  10. Recipes – This one is awkward because I don’t cook.  But, I do eat and my husband cooks so I save recipes that look good to me to Evernote and then I email them to my husband.  The ones that he rejects get deleted from the notebook.
  11. Save Articles to Read Later – Occasionally I come across an article that I want to read but its too long and I don’t have the time to read it right now, so I save it to Evernote where I can read it later.  Since I have Evernote on my phone and iPad, I can pull up these articles when I’m stuck waiting in line and have a few minutes to kill.  I also use it to save articles I really like and want to save when I need a shot of inspiration.
  12. Twitter Archive – I setup a recipe on a site called If This Then That that sends every tweet into my Evernote account.  I then use Evernote’s search function to find what I’m looking for.  You can find the instructions for setting this up here.

So, what do you think?  Are you convinced you should use Evernote?  Tell me why or why not in the comments below.

Evernote 101

Sam and I are big fans of Evernote.  Evernote is a note taking application that allows me to take notes on my computer, web, and mobile device.  I can also clip a web page and add it to my Evernote account.  For me, the best part of Evernote is that I can sync my account across multiple devices.  So, my work computer, work laptop, Android phone, iPad, and iPod (yeah, I have that many devices) all have the same notes which means I have my information with me everywhere I go.  If I don’t have access to any of those devices, I can still access my account on the web as long as I have an internet connection.

Evernote Logo

Initially, the price tag of free and the ability to clip web pages were what attracted me to Evernote.  I had tried other note taking apps before and I didn’t like them, so I was happy I could use Evernote for free because if it didn’t work out, I wouldn’t be out any money.  I’ve since upgraded to a Premium account and for $45 a year, I have 1GB of storage a month, offline notebook storage on my mobile devices, and I can share notebooks with other Evernote users. Clipping entire or selections of a web page was a feature I couldn’t pass up and it allows me to keep everything I want to remember in one place.  Web clipping is available for free and premium users.

I have notebooks setup for every area of my life: work, blogging, home, recipes, and most recently I’ve added a Christmas list notebook.  I can use the text editor to create blog posts, format text, and create checkboxes next to my to do items (which is essential for my list making habits).

I really like the Evernote app on my Android phone and its much better than the Blackberry client.  I can add new text, voice, or photo notes and I can use Skitch (I’ll get to Skitch in a minute) to edit pictures.  And since I am a premium user, I can setup specific notebooks to be available offline which allows me to access my notes even when my cell service is spotty.

Skitch

Evernote has recently acquired Skitch, an app you can use to annotate and manipulate images.  Skitch is available as an app for your Mac and for Android phones.  An app for iOS devices is said to be coming soon.  I have used Skitch with Evernote on my Android phone to add a arrow pointing out something in a picture I’ve taken and my stepson uses Skitch to doodle and I save what he creates into his own notebook.

I could go on and on about Evernote but you really need to try it out for yourself.  Sign up for a free account, download the client for your computer, install the web clipper, and you can thank me later.
